Social and Cultural Context of the life of Paul Scholten

Many details in the biography of Paul Scholten, which is posted on the web as a draft for a new biography, ask for an explanatory note, not only for the foreign reader, but also for the younger generation of Dutch readers. At the same time in many cases it could be asked whether these data are relevant in the context of Paul Scholten’s theory. The readers are asked to comment on the draft-biography to reach a common understanding about the question which data should be comprised in a biography, written for an international audience.
When some common understanding is reached about the data which are relevant in a biography for an international audience, next the problem has to be tackled, how the social and cultural aspects of the life of Paul Scholten, which thus are selected, can be explained to foreign readers. To explain means here to make something comparable with social and cultural phenomena to which foreign readers are acquainted. Therefore the reader will find below a list of the possible research questions which popped up in the course of translating the Dutch biography. Foreign readers are asked to react on this list, when they recognize questions which refer to practices or conceptions in their own country. Dutch readers are asked to tell whether they think that these phenomena are typically Dutch and/or relevant in an international context.

Readers are also asked to indicate whether there are other aspects of the social and cultural life in the period of the Inter Bellum which should be  part of the research and to point out existing literature (preferably in English , but also in Dutch or other laguages) which may be particularly relevant for the study of certain questions
